Friendship Link with
SI Johannesburg
South Africa
Just after Christmas SI Dunfermline succeeded in a joint project with SI Johannesburg to help a school in Zimbabwe. Money was provided by SI Dunfermline and SI Johannesburg sent jotters and pencils to the Soroptimists in Harare, who distributed the material to one of their primary schools. The photo shows the delighted pupils holding up their jotters.
SI Dunfermline
has had a Friendship Link with SI Johannesburg and district for over 10 years
and the correspondent attended Dunfermline’s 50th anniversary lunch
in 2000.
The Johannesburg
club has several practical projects including the Aurora Project which supports
South African adolescent girls and schoolteachers from disadvantaged areas,
such as Soweto, with the objective of enhancing their self-esteem to lead
fulfilled lives as persons in their own right
Members support
the African Self-Help Association in Soweto organising children’s Christmas
parties and collection of Easter eggs for distribution to disadvantaged
children.
There is also a project to support AIDS sufferers
A Dunfermline
girl, who is supported by SI Dunfermline to work during her gap year in an orphanage near Johannesburg. is making
contact with the club there and members plan to meet her and make her welcome
with visits to local tourist spots.
